Ice Fishing in the French River Area at Great Escape Cabins

Ice fishing is a pastime of many during the winter months. It brings family and friends together, surrounded by laughter, fish stories and relaxation. Enjoying the day ice fishing in a hut out on the frozen water is one of our favourite activities at Great Escape Cabins. Be sure to take in the Northern Ontario scenery. Surrounded by towering pines along the rocky shoreline, the classic Canadian Shield landscape is unforgettable.

The Murdock River provides a multitude of fish species, including walleye, pike, perch and crappie. With many great varieties of fish in our river, the opportunities are endless. Northern Pike and Walleye (Pickerel) open January 1, 2020 to March 15, 2020. Yellow Perch and Crappie is open all year. There’s no need to worry about filleting your catch at the end of the day, as we will happily take care of that for you.

While ice fishing often involves being taxied out to your rented hut on snowmobiles, our huts are conveniently located within a 5-minute walk down the river from our resort, giving our guests the ability to come and go as they please throughout the day. The heated and insulated hut provides warmth during those cold, blustery, winter days. We also drill some extra holes outside the ice hut as well, to provide our guests with opportunities to ice fish outside if they wish.

Many people want to give ice fishing a try, but buying all the necessary gear can become expensive, that’s why we offer equipment rentals at an affordable rate. Poles, line, hooks, and more, are all available.

Would you prefer an expert-guided ice fishing trip? Our guide Adam has been fishing these waters his whole life. As a professional guide, he provides all the equipment and bait, and will clean and filet all fish caught.

Although ice fishing was originally a means of survival during the long winter months, today it is a social activity enjoyed by many. It becomes an escape from technology and the busy world around us. It helps us teach our children patience and perseverance. It allows people to reconnect with each other, and nature. Most importantly, it provides children with family memories they will cherish for years to come.
